Genre of my trailer

23 Feb

The genre of the trailer is that of a romantic comedy; the conventions of such trailers are that there are usually voiceovers, this is to sometimes to enable the audience to feel that they are involved as the voice is talking directly to them, they are also used to help add comedic effect as they can be used to moc the characters. Another convention of a rom-com is that embarrassment of the characters is used in order to make the audience laugh, this is because they are laughing at other peoples misfortunes as they wouldn’t wish it upon themselves. An example of this is in the film ‘Meet The Fockers’ where greg is opening a champagne bottle to celebrate his visit to his inlaws, however the cork flies across the room and hits the urn in which holds the ashes of his girlfriend’s grandmother. If you were in his situation of course it wouldn’t at all be funny however as an onlooker we laugh at awkward moments.

In a rom-com film 99% of the time there is a happy ending, however in my trailer there isn’t a clear indication to how the film will end, therefore I would hope that this will entice viewers into the cinema to find out the ending for themselves. The typical rom-com storyline involves two main characters who develop feelings for eachother, but this is then distrupted by a certain event causing it to disturb the perfect storyline. In my trailer the disruption will be Ryan’s lack of luck in impressing Anna his co-worker.

Actors

RYAN SCOTT : Played by Matt Cooke

The Lead male character is designed to be unlucky when it comes to love, from the outside it appears that the character has it all; he has the car, he has the house and he also has the fancy suits, however what is missing is the girl. Ryan Scott is very successful in his job, however he thinks the same applies when it comes to females, Ryan is quite a corny character, a stereotypical ‘mans man’ by this I mean he will try and woo the ladies over with his money and chat up lines, but will it work ?

ANNA CAMPBELL- Played by Georgia Wyse

I have chosen to use this actress as the character will be a female adult, I therefore needed someone who looks mature. I feel that the character looks quite classy therefore this helps to create more of a convincing character.

The character that she will be playing is quite high maintenance, therefore I needed someone who obviously wouldn’t be shy on camera. Anna is a successful business woman and is seen as a threat to other women, however she has a comical side.

Trailer Analysis

In order to keep the woman of his dreams from falling for another guy, Charlie Logan has to break the curse that has made him wildly popular with single women: Sleep with Charlie once, and the next man you meet will be your true love.”

I chose to look at this trailer as I feel it has the same theme as mine, which is a man who is unlucky when it comes to love. The film is also a romantic comedy, it stars Dane Cook who is a well know comedy actor, this will maybe help reassure the audience of a good film. The title is ironic as although the character is known to be a lucky charm, he is not actually sucessful in love himself due to the curse.

The trailer contains a voiceover which is a typical convention of a comedy trailer, it is made up of a number of comical clips, which briefly explain the story of the film, without giving away the ending.

Title 2

As my trailer is going to be from the comedy genre, I used a font that I feel looks quite childish and fun, almost contradicting the title. This may give hints to the audience that the main character may not be the conventional ‘man’.
I used the silhouette in order to create a mysterious effect, it is almost mimicking the likes of James Bond, who is a well known ‘macho man’. The position that the figure is in is quite laid back and is posing with his arms crossed.

Titles

I have been experimenting with titles for my trailer, the title of my film is ‘He’s The Man’. I put the emphasis on the word man in order to create the illusion that the character is very masculine and stereotypical, however the character is infact quite corny, a stereotypical ‘mans man’ with his money good looks and cheesy chat up lines, therefore the title is almost mocking him. ‘THE’ is highlighted red suggesting that he is the best, when the audience is shown that he infact encounters alot of faults. I used the Male symbol to give hints that he is just like every other male and that they are almost like clones.

Update

11 Jan

I have been looking at existing magazine covers, however I have found that there isn’t a lot for the comedy genre, this isn’t helpful as I wanted to compare a variety of covers in order to higlight what works for me and what doesn’t in terms of the look of the covers.

Poster Analysis

10 Jan

As part of the course this year we also have to create a poster for our created trailer, so I therefore wanted to look at existing film posters in order to decide what I feel looks good and of course what doesnt work.

The reason why I have chosen to analyse the poster above is due to the fact that I feel that although it is very simple it says alot about the film. The main statement in the poster is that there is a divide between men and women. This is emphasised by the thick black line between the two film characters. Another statement that i think the poster makes is that a woman is said to think more when it comes to love and be more head strong, as opposed to men who have the cliche of only worrying about the physical side of the relationship. This is portrayed in the position of the hearts on the poster.

The female character is wearing a red dress, red is recognised as being the colour of both power and passion, whereas the male character is clothed in a black suit jacket, black is often seen as being quite mysterious. This could also give a hint to the audience about how the characters are portrayed in the film.
